Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child,
Listen to the DON’TS,
Listen to the SHOULDN’TS,
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS,
Then listen close to me-
Anything can happen child,
ANYTHING can be.
-Shel Silverstein; Where the Sidewalk Ends
Phoenix, Arizona. It’s in the middle of the desert so one would think that no one would like to go there in the middle of the summer months, when the tempetures would reach well above 100. Yet when the cadilac resort taxi pulled up, and very hot and tired Timothy O’Neill stepped out and closed his eyes, trying to get used to the heat. Being stuck in a sub and then stepping out into 100 degree weather was not the best thing for the communications officer.
To make matters worse for the tired man was who came out of the back seat. Tony Piccolo, wearing outragous civvies, smiled when he came out, but then frowned when the air conditioning wore off and the heat took over. He moved out of the way and and happy looking Lucas Wolenczak stepped out, fully recovered from his past injuries. The three men stood there for a moment, soaking in the outside surroundings, then closed the doors behind them and took their bags into the resort’s lobby.
One almost got the feeling that they were standing in an air conditioned desert. The floor was tiled with large rock like tiles, each one a desert brown. High above them was an arched celing, chandeleers hanging down and sparkiling from the windows in the celing. There were pinkish couches on the left, along with a small gift shop. On the right was a long regestration counter, marble topped. Past that was the conciere’s desk, and a glass enclosed room with couches to relax on, leading out to the courtyard.
Tim took in the sights, then walked up to the desk to check in. The UEO had this grand idea, and it was to take place in this resort. The Thrasis Confrence was to include a representitive plus a few friends to come from each allience within the UEO, like the U.S, European alliences and Pacific ones. They were to talk about advancements and trade and technologies. Tim was chosen for being multi-ligual and being on the flagship. Him and his friends were here to represent the U.S.
The lady behind the desk looked up at them and smiled. "Can I help you?" She asked. Tim dropped his bag next to him and looked up at her. The UEO was going to pay for the room, so he only pulled out his ID card, since he knew she would ask for it.
"We’re here to check in. The name’s O’Neill," He said as politly as he could being tired. What a better place to spend the end of leave. The lady typed on the computer and then looked up at him.
"We have you booked for a two room suite with two queen beds," She replied. Tim looked back at Tony and Lucas, then back at the lady.
"There’s a fold out couch, right?" He asked. Someone would have to share since Miguel Ortiz was comming in on a later flight from Florida since he had been visiting his family. He sighed, and knew a solution would present itself. The lady nodded and typed some more.
"Wait here, please," She dissapeared into a back room, leaving Tim at the counter. Tony and Lucas came up to stand next to him, both of them leaning on the counter.
"What’s goin’ on?" Tony asked, being the always impatiant one.
"She went to the back for a minuet," Tim replied.
"Thank you captain obvious," Lucas droned from the other side. Tim turned and gave him a look before turning back to the counter. The lady came back and smiled at him.
"The UEO is paying for your room, so I need to see ID cards for everyone over 18," She said. Tim and Tony showed their cards, Lucas just sat there for a moment, acting like a normal teenager. The lady picked up on this and smiled at him. "A girl about your age checked in for this UEO thing,"
"Oh really?" He said in responce.
"Yeah," She changed the subject as she handed them their key cards. "Here are four keycards you can use to get in your rooms," She explained, putting them in a paper pouchlike thing. "And here are your white recetes. They alow you to charge things to the room,"
"We’ll be usin’ thoes a lot," Tony commented.
"You’re in room S216. Bob will show you the way there," A man came up behind them with a large cart. They put their duffles on it and followed him to the elevator in the corner.
"I know you from somewhere," Tim commented as he waited for the elevator to come.
"Yeah, I used to work in New Cape Quest, but then I moved out here with my sister," He commented dryly.
"You’re the waiter from that restaurant!" Lucas exclaimed, figuring it out.
"Florida Cape," He replied as the elevator pinged open. The walked in behind the large cart and Bob pushed the 2 button. "I didn’t like it there, so I moved here," He explained.
"It’s less humid, that’s for sure," Tim remarked.
"And it’s a nicer area, excpt for the detention center of 17 N. It’s right outside town." Bob said as the doors opened. They noticed a raven haired woman watching them from the balcony, but when Tony took a second look, the table she had been sitting at was empty. He shrugged it off and followed the other out of the lobby building.
All the walkways were outside, each block overlooking a courtyard. As they took the long side of the courtyard, they looked down at the large foutain, then at the nice pool. They passed the fourth wall of this courtyard and came to see a nice park like one. Bob turned right and brought them to the end of the row before the elevator.
"Here’s you room," Bob said, opening the door with his master keycard. "The room the confrance is in is right outside the door we came out of, Sedona 3," He said. "Here’s a map of the place," The guys took their things off the cart and were about to shut the door when Bob poked his head in. "Oh, stait that way," He pointed. "is a waterpark," He closed the door and left the guys to unpack.
"I don’t know about you, but I’m going for a swim," Tony said. Tim looked over at him, then down at the pool.
"It’s ten o’clock at night," He said, being the sound mind of the group.
"So I don’t have to wair sunblock, plus, there are other people in the pool," Tony said in his defence. Tim gave up and started unpacking.
"I’ll come with," Lucas said.
"How can you guys think about swimming when we live on a submarine?" Tim asked, almost rhetoricly since the guys had left. They had obviously been waring their swimsuites, probably their only shorts. He stood there and finally decided that he would join them when he was finished unpacking.
